Annual Food Drive

It is currently estimated that 21% of Orange County (roughly 615,000 individuals) struggle with hunger in Orange County.  Children and seniors make up 50% of those in need of food assistance.  Families who once were able to contribute to their community are now finding themselves out of work for extended periods of time and in need of a hand up to make ends meet.  Others who are working for a much lower salary and have to choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table can now turn to their local pantry for food assistance.

Whether you've been feeling charitable or have been meaning to clean out your cupboards for food and drinks you don't plan on consuming, 'tis the season to give a little back to the community!  Our office will be holding a food drive for the holidays.  Everything we collect between now and Tuesday, December 20 will be sent to Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.  By donating, you can take a powerful stand in the fight against hunger.

If you would also like to donate some time, Second Harvest accepts volunteers who sort and label the donated food and check everything for quality and safety.

Braces-Friendly Recipes

Here's a recipe that is safe for those of you with braces!

BEST BAKED SPAGHETTI (6-8 servings):

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped or 1 Tablespoon dried onion
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 3 (8 oz.) cans tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup Burgundy or merlot wine (Burgundy gives a deeper flavor)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup grated American cheese, about 4 slices, or 1/2 cup grated mild cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 lb. dry spaghetti, broken in half
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a large no-stick frying pan or Dutch over, saute meat, onion and garlic.  Add tomato sauce, wine, oregano, sugar and salt.  Simmer, cover, 1 hour, stirring occasionally.  (It really makes a difference if you can take this amount of time!  Otherwise 20 minutes will serve to heat everything.)  Cook spaghetti and drain.  put half the spaghetti in a greased 3-quart casserole, and then add half the sauce and 1/4 cup of the grated cheese.  Add the remaining spaghetti and sauce, and stir everything with a large spoon.  Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.  Best if baked for 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

Go Hog Wild!

Even Old MacDonald can't compete with Farm Sanctuary, a 25-year-old animal-care nonprofit with three outposts and more than 1,000 animals.  With help from local animal protection agencies, the organization identifies cases and works with authorities to legally rescue sheep, pigs, goats, and more.  Clean out barns, build fences, and socialize with the animals in Watkins Glen, New York; Action, California; or Orland, California, during "work parties" held monthly April through November.

Want to give back closer to home?  Farm Sanctuary holds an Adopt-a-Turkey project every Thanksgiving, encouraging people to financially sponsor a feathered fried instead of eating one.
