Getting into an elite school is now harder than ever...

A new article on states that although students enrolling in U.S. colleges are on the decline, those who are applying to elite schools, the admissions process is now "more cutthroat and anxiety-inducing than ever".  On the top of the list of elite schools that is hard to get accepted to is Stanford University with the acceptance rate of 5.1% (2138 offers; 42167 applicants) followed by Harvard University with 5.9% acceptance (2023 offers; 34295 applicants).
The reason for the low acceptance rate may be due to students applying to more top schools, forcing those schools to reject a bigger number of applicants.  Although some sources say that the rates may be misleading because each school defines applications differently.
