Go for Garlic, Skip the Bad Breath

Garlic does wonders for your linguine, and, it turns out, your health. A new study from Australia finds that a daily 480-miligram garlic supplement can lower blood pressure as much as some prescription drugs. Just eating the pungent plant brings big benefits, too: Four or more cloves a day can lower “bad” LDL cholesterol by 9% and might reduce the risk of colon cancer by 30%.

The downside: breath that could wilt flowers. Fortunately, there are easy antidotes. Drinking a cup of low-fat milk along with your meal can keep your breath smelling fresh, per a study in the Journal of Food Science. Researchers are also testing lemon juice and green tea. As for that mint gum? It helps temporarily, but it’s just a cover-up. So go ahead and eat that 40-clove garlic chicken, but consider washing it down with a glass of milk. Your date will thank you.
